Star Test Activity Report

The Star Test Activity Report shows students who have and have not tested during a specific date range.

How do I get to this page?

  1. Log in to Renaissance.
  2. On the Home page, select Star Reading, Star Early Literacy, or Star Maths.
  3. In the drop down-list, select Reports.

  4. On the Star / Assessment tab on the Reports page, under “Test Status and Results,” select Star Test Activity Report.

Who can do this with default user permissions?

School Network Level Administrators, School Network Dashboard Owners, School Network Staff, School Level Administrators, School Staff, Teachers

  1. Use the Subject drop-down list to select the subject for the report: Reading or Maths.

  2. Use the Assessment Types drop-down list to narrow down the type of assessments you want to include in the report. The options available will change depending on the chosen subject:

    (If Maths is the chosen subject, you will not need to select Star Maths as the Assessment Type.)
  3. Use the Students drop-down list to select either a single class at the chosen school, or choose All Classes to select all the classes at the chosen school.

    • School administrators and school staff can only select classes in their own school.
    • Teachers can only select their own classes.

    To select specific classes, groups, or students at the chosen school, use the links below the Students drop-down list. Selecting one of these links will open a corresponding pop-up window; in that window, tick the box at the top of the list to select all the available choices, or make individual selections below it. You can enter search criteria in the field at the top of the window to find a specific class, group, or student. (In the "Select Students" pop-up window, school network- and school-level users can select a year to narrow down the list of students.)
    Examples of the pop-up windows that appear when the Classes, Groups, or Students links are selected. In each case, a search field at the top lets you search for specific classes, groups, or students; a tick box above the listed classes, groups, or students lets you select or deselect all of them at once; and the Clear All link, Cancel button, and Save Selection buttons are at the bottom. In the Select Students window, there is a drop-down list to the left of the search field where school network- and school-level users can specify a single year to search within.

    • School administrators and school staff can only select classes, groups, or students in their own school.
    • Teachers can only select their own classes, their own groups, or students enrolled in one of their own classes.

    Once you have made your choices, select Save Selection at the bottom of the pop-up window.

  4. If you want to use demographic data to further refine the data in the report, select Choose Demographics...

    By default, the "All" option is chosen for Ethnicity, Gender, Language, and Year Level. To reduce the scope, choose the "Select" option at the top of the appropriate column and then tick your selections in that column.

    In the example above, the user has selected two Languages and three Year Levels, while leaving Ethnicity and Gender at the default "All" options. Note: The Filter Reports by Ethnicity user permission may be set to prevent the use of ethnicities as a filter.

    By default, the "All" option is chosen for Characteristics. To reduce the scope, choose Select Characteristics... and then tick each characteristic you want students in the report to have. You must also choose any or all (after "Include students with") to specify whether students with any of the selected characteristics will be included in the report or only those with all of the selected characteristics.

    In the example above, the user selected two Characteristics (Children from Service Families and EAL Competent). Because any is selected, the report will include students who are Children from Service Families, EAL Competent, or both. If all had been selected, only students who are both Children from Service Families and EAL Competent would be included. Note: The Filter Reports by Characteristics user permission may be set to prevent the use of characteristics as a filter.

    Once you are finished choosing demographic options, select Apply at the bottom of the window to save your choices (or Cancel to close the window without saving your choices).
  5. Use the Group By drop-down list to choose how you want the information in the report to be grouped: by classes/groups, by years, or not grouped.

    Use the Date Range drop-down list to choose the dates you want to generate the report for. You can select an existing marking period, screening window, or you can select Custom... and set your own dates (use the calendars to select a range of dates or type them in the fields using dd/mm/yyyy format; then select Apply to use the dates you have chosen or Cancel to close this pop-up without saving your selection). Dates can be in the current school year or up to three years prior to the current school year.
    The user has selected a Group By option, and has chosen to select custom dates. A pop-up calendar is open, allowing the user to choose the dates. The dates can also be entered in the fields above the calendar. The Apply and Cancel buttons are in the upper-right corner of the pop-up window.

    If schools use their own unique date ranges within a school network screening window, those ranges will all have the same name. To help you tell them apart, the dates they cover will be added to the end of the name.

  6. Under the Group By drop-down list, choose which students to include in the report: all students, students who have completed a test of the selected type, or those who have not.

    Tick Show Student ID to include student IDs in the report.

    Tick Show Non-participation Status to include students' non-participation status (if any).

    Tick Hide [Groups or Years] Without Data if you want to exclude groups or years from the report that have no testing data (the name of the box will change based on which Group By option you chose in step 5; if you selected Do Not Group, this box will not be present).

  7. Once you are done choosing report options, select Update Report.
  8. The report will generate and then open at the bottom of the page.
    An example report. The testing data for each student is shown, including tests completed, those with failed practices, and incomplete, along with the date of the most recent test and the time duration. Students with no completed tests and a summary for the class are shown in separate tables.
    For each class or group, the report shows:
    • Each student's year
    • The number of tests each student completed, did not complete due to a failed practice, and did not complete for other reasons within the selected date range (from step 5)
    • The date of the most recent test
    • Reading Age (shown when the assessment type chosen in step 1 is a Star Reading test)
    • An indication of how much time the student took to finish the test:
      • Short (less time than expected)
      • Standard (about as much time as expected)
      • Long (more time than expected)—this is not affected if the student used extended time limits

    If you selected Do Not Group in step 5, the students will not be grouped; instead, they will be listed in alphabetical order.

    Below the table is a list of students who have not completed any tests, followed by a summary showing the total number of students in the class or group and the number who have and have not taken tests during the selected date range.

    If you selected Show only students with no completed tests in step 6, then this list and the summary are all that will be shown on the report.

  9. You can change any of the options you have selected and then regenerate the report by selecting Update Report.
  10. Select the PDF icon at the top of the page or the Print or Save button above the first table in the report to create a PDF of the report. You can also select the Download Data button above the first table in the report to download a CSV (comma-separated values) version of the report that you can open in a spreadsheet program.

  11. To return to the Reports page, select either Back to Reports or the report icon at the top of the screen.
