Star Maths normally starts a student's first test with questions slightly below the student's year level. If the student has taken a Star Maths test in the past six months, Star Maths uses the results from the last test to decide the starting difficulty level for the next one.
However, when students have an Estimated Maths Level (ML) set, Star Maths uses that level to decide how difficult the first question should be. You should only enter an Estimated Maths Level for students who receive maths instruction at a higher or lower level than their current year.
Although year 1 students can take the Star Maths test, 1 cannot be set as an Estimated Maths Instructional Level (MIL).
